When we first visited this rural coastal property, the setting was striking—a sloping bank surrounded by huge flaxes that dominated the landscape. While the flaxes provided a sense of place, it was clear they had to go to achieve the client’s vision of a lush, subtropical oasis.
The owners entrusted us with their cherished cacti collection, giving us the honor of designing a cacti garden near the house. This garden became the heart of the transformation, blending seamlessly with the property’s subtropical theme.
To enhance the functionality and beauty of the space, we installed a screen fence across the driveway, complete with TeK Jalil gates, to ensure the dogs could roam safely. A concrete pad was laid in preparation for a future spa, and we created sleeper-paved paths that wound through the top gardens, accented by lush, vibrant plantings.
Corten steel edging defined the garden beds, while corten stairs were crafted to connect the deck to the lower garden levels. We extended the top level of the property using large boulders for retention, creating a flat, usable living space off the house. This new area features a firepit garden, perfect for cozy evenings under the stars.
A path of hard fill and shell rock leads from the gates to a middle garden nestled on the slope. During the flax removal, we unearthed a hidden treasure—a weathered boat. This became a stunning art piece, placed as though it had washed ashore, and served as the centerpiece for the garden’s arid-style plantings.
The result is a landscape that not only reflects the owners’ vision but feels like a natural extension of the coastal environment. Every element, from the functional features to the artistic touches, was carefully designed to create a harmonious and welcoming retreat.
