When we were approached to design and transform this entire property—both the front and backyard—we knew it needed to be something special. The client had a vision of a lush, tropical retreat and wanted to enter the Taranaki Garden Festival, so we embraced the challenge and came up with a fitting name: Tropics on Mangati.
Designing a Garden Oasis
To create a truly standout subtropical landscape, we carefully selected statement plants such as palms, cycas, Xanthorrhoea, and Dasylirion grass trees, ensuring a dynamic and eye-catching display. The design was structured into distinct zones, including:
- 🌿 A backyard subtropical garden with flowing paths, manicured lawns, and island gardens, complete with a small deck to retreat to.
- 🌱 An edible food forest and shade-house, blending beauty with sustainability.
- 🪴 A front garden transformation, incorporating a memorial succulent garden, a vertical wall garden, multi-level gardens, and feature rocks and water bowls for added texture and movement.
One of the unique aspects of this project was working with the client’s extensive Bromeliad collection, which she had brought with her when relocating to Taranaki. To ensure these plants thrived, we emphasized the importance of layering and canopy creation, mimicking their natural rainforest environment.
Adding the Finishing Touches
What started as a blank slate—apart from an existing cabbage tree at the front—quickly evolved into a lush, vibrant space. After seeing the backyard transformation, the client asked us to extend the subtropical theme to the front yard, creating a cohesive tropical paradise throughout the property.
To enhance the space further, we designed and built a fish pond on the driveway side of the house, adding a tranquil water element that complemented the rich textures and greenery of the garden.
A Garden Worth Showcasing
The client has now entered the Taranaki Garden Festival for two years running, a testament to her dedication and love for her garden. Even through personal challenges, she has maintained and evolved the space, adding her own touches while continuing the care and resetting required for Bromeliads and succulents to thrive.
We’re incredibly proud to see one of our designs showcased in the festival, inspiring others to embrace subtropical landscaping in Taranaki.
