From Unused Space to Versatile Subtropical Haven

About the project

This project transformed a fragmented and visually cluttered backyard into a cohesive subtropical retreat designed for both relaxation and productivity.

The brief was to enhance the overall aesthetic of the space, conceal the shed and mismatched boundary fencing, create space for a future outdoor shower, and incorporate lush subtropical planting alongside functional vegetable gardens.

To unify the perimeter, bamboo screening panels were installed to soften and visually simplify the existing fencing. Productive gardening was incorporated through custom raised vegetable boxes constructed along the boundary using Straightcurve garden edging, creating clean architectural lines while maximising planting space. These beds were layered with screening palms and an abundance of ferns to establish privacy and a rich subtropical atmosphere.

A standout feature of the space is a raised circular planter also built with Straightcurve products, showcasing a striking Xanthorrhoea australis (Australian Grass Tree), adding sculptural form and a strong focal point within the garden.

A dedicated zone was left for the future installation of an outdoor shower, seamlessly integrated into the planting design to maintain privacy and cohesion.

The result is a balanced outdoor environment that blends structure with softness — a private subtropical sanctuary that is both visually refined and highly functional.
