When we first arrived at this Vogeltown property, the backyard was a blank canvas—small, exposed, and lacking privacy. The client wanted to honor the memory of her late husband with a tropical garden that reflected their shared love of lush greenery and flamingos. Our task was to transform this space into a tranquil retreat, where she could relax, entertain, and find comfort.
To bring her vision to life, we began by addressing privacy and shade. A screen fence and a pergola created a secluded and inviting seating area. We surrounded the space with subtropical plantings that, over time, will grow into a lush green screen, further enhancing the sense of sanctuary.
A paved area beneath the pergola became the perfect spot to sit and enjoy the tropical surroundings, while garden beds along the house and boundary added texture and depth to the design. The boundary planting also provided a soft buffer to the public space beyond, creating a more private and welcoming atmosphere.
One of the unique features of this project was the addition of a vegetable box, blending practicality with beauty. The client’s love for flamingos inspired small design details, adding a personal and playful touch to the garden.
The transformation was completed with a celebratory drink shared with the happy homeowner, who was thrilled with her new backyard retreat.
The result is a vibrant, subtropical garden that perfectly balances function and beauty, creating a space that is as meaningful as it is relaxing.
